Written by Jared Parry on 21st June 2022.

Vasyl Lomachenko possesses one of the most exciting and extensive skillsets in boxing. Lomachenko was fast-tracked to the world title following his outstanding amateur career, and he won his first world title in just his third fight, defeating Gary Russell Jr by a majority decision.

Lomachenko did it all in the amateurs and won the ultimate prize of an Olympic gold medal at the London 2012 games. Ending his amateur career with an incredible record of 94-2, Lomachenko would embark on a journey in the pro game back in 2013. Lomachenko's pro debut was a title fight, as he would knock out Jose Luis Ramirez in four rounds to pick up the WBO international title. Further up this card, Orlando Salido would win the vacant WBO world featherweight title, and Lomachenko was confirmed as his first defence.

In just Lomachenko's second fight as a pro, he was fighting for a world title. Salido would miss weight for the bout, meaning the title was declared vacant, and the title would only be on the line for Lomachenko. Lomachenko would be unsuccessful in his first world title challenge, as he was on the wrong end of a tight split decision. The belt was declared vacant following Salido missing weight.

Lomachenko would get another shot at the vacant belt next time out. This time against the undefeated Gary Russell Jr. Russell Jr proved another tough test for Lomachenko, but Lomachenko passed this one, as the scorecards read 116-112×2 and 114-114 in favour of Lomachenko, crowning him a world champion in just his third fight.

Lomachenko would go on to be a three-weight world champion, as he has held world honours at super featherweight and lightweight since, including being a three-belt champion at lightweight. Russell Jr also went on to become a world champion, as just two fights after his loss to Lomachenko, Russell Jr would knock out Jhonny Gonzalez to win the WBC featherweight title.
