Kambosos Jr started his pro career back in 2013, as he dispatched Jayson Mac Gura in two rounds with a sickening body shot in his debut. Kambosos Jr continued to impress as he picked up all the domestic titles in the Australian lightweight division before entering the WBA rankings in 2016 when he unanimously defeated Brandon Ogilvie for the WBA Oceania lightweight title.

Two fights later, Kambosos Jr added the the IBF Pan Pacific title to his mantle following a stoppage victory over Krai Setthaphon. Kambosos Jr then began to fight outside of Australia, and after stringing five victories together on the road, he was mandated to fight former IBF featherweight champion Lee Selby.

The Selby fight was slated to take place in Cardiff on 9th May 2020, but then the global pandemic hit. The fight was rescheduled to take place in the Matchroom Wembley bubble in October 2020. Kambosos Jr was declared the winner by split decision following a very close fight.

Kambosos Jr would get his world title shot next as he squared off with IBF, WBA and WBO champion Teofimo Lopez. Kambosos Jr was a heavy underdog coming into this bout, but he made a mockery of the bookies, as he dropped Lopez heavily in round one of the bout, then surviving a tenth round knockdown of his own, before winning the belts by split decision in Madison Square Garden.

Haney's career in the pro game began in 2015, as he made light work of Gonzalo Lopez Rodriguez, dispatching him in a round. Haney added his first title in his 14th bout, when he stopped Maximino Toala in four rounds to pick up the WBC Youth title. The USBA title came five fights later as he defeated the seasoned pro, Mason Menard.

Haney began picking up rankings belts, and then was soon signed by Matchroom Boxing. Matchroom had high hopes of Haney, as he was the headline attraction for their show in Maryland. Haney lived up to the hype around him, as he produced a show reel knockout of Antonio Moran in the ninth round.

Haney won the WBC 'interim' world title in his next bout, when he defeated Zaur Abdullaev. However, in October 2019, current champion Vasiliy Lomachenko was "promoted" to WBC 'Franchise' Champion, meaning Haney was elevated to WBC world champion.

Haney made successful defences of his belt against Alfredo Santiago in November 2019, Yuriorkis Gamboa in November 2020, and the seasoned pro Jorge Linares, all by unanimous decision. Last time out, Haney was given a tough test from former IBF super featherweight world champion JoJo Diaz. Haney came through to defend his WBC belt, which lead to this huge fight next.

Haney travels into Kambosos Jr's backyard without his father present in his corner, as he was unable to obtain a visa to travel to Australia. Haney also left Matchroom Boxing to sign with Top Rank to aid negotiations for the fight. The pair met this week and the face off got very heated between the pair.
