Both men came into the contest with impressive stoppage records with Benavidez winning 88% of his fights by stoppage and, Lemieux holding a 76.5% stoppage record. Many in the arena felt that this fight surely wasnt going the full 12 round distance.

At the end of the second round, Benavidez landed punch after punch, and with the referee watching closely only the bell saved the Canadian from an impressive stoppage. Despite recieving a one sided beating, Lemieux carried on coming to the onslaught that came his way.

But, despite ending the second round in peril, the corner of Lemieux ended the contest midway through the third round.
After the fight Benavidez went on to say, "He’s the only one with the guts to face me. I’m waiting for all those top guys to send me the contract. I’m right here waiting for them. I’ll put myself up against everyone. I guarantee I’m knocking everyone out. Facing tough guys like Lemieux just pushes me to keep moving to the next level.”
Benavidez ranks as number 2 in the world with the Ring Magazine, and has the 168 king Canelo Alvarez in his crosshairs.

With Canelo Alvarez certain to fight Dmitry Bivol or Gennadiy Golovkin in September, the only name that could be available for Benavidez would be a battle with Caleb Plant. The former IBF world champion was last in action in November 2021 losing his title to Canelo by stoppage in the 11th round. Plant and Benavidez would be explosive once again, with 'Sweethands' looking to rebound after his only loss.
