Who Are Tyson Fury’s Top 5 Greatest Heavyweights Of All Time?

Written by Libby Baker on 23rd November 2022.

As Tyson Fury heads towards an undisputed bout to write his name into the sport’s history, who does he consider the all-time greats?

In an interview with IFL TV from June 2020 Fury listed his top five heavyweight from days gone by.

“My all-time five not including myself and in no specific order is Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Joe Louis and I’d probably put Rocky Marciano in there as well.”

Previously known as Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali is regarded as one of the best to ever do it with a record of 56 wins and just 5 defeats. Ali was an inspiration to many inside and outside of the sport, as he was not only a boxer but a philanthropist and social activist too.

One of Ali’s five defeats came at the hands of another name on Tyson Fury’s list – Larry Holmes. The ‘Easton Assassin’ was famous for his impressive left jab which is rated highly in the history of the heavyweight division.

Lennox Lewis was also amongst ‘The Gypsy King’s’ list. ‘The Lion’ is famously remembered for his defeat over greats like Frank Bruno, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. Although Tyson Fury may like to be known as the greatest British heavyweight ever, Lewis is still a top contender for that title despite representing Canada in the Olympics.

Next up is Joe Louis – a trail blazer who had only 3 defeats from 69 fights in his professional career. The ‘Brown Bomber’ became the heavyweight champion after his win over James J. Braddock but it was arguably his match up with Max Schmeling which saw Louis become a national hero.

The last man in Fury’s list is the undefeated heavyweight, Rocky Marciano. Marciano had an impressive 43 knockouts out of his 49 wins as he was known to press forward and use his power and skill in the ring. His record saw 6 title defences, and he is the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated… so far.

Tyson Fury is preparing for battle with Derek Chisora on December 3rd – a fight that doesn’t do much for his legacy, but will put him one step closer to undisputed and a claim to join somebody else’s top 5 list.
