The Latest British Title CHALLENGERS

Written by Jared Parry on 14th July 2022.

One of the most popular times of the month for any British boxing fan is when the BBBofC release the latest British title circular, so it's possible to see who is next in line to challenge for the prestigious Lord Lonsdale belt. Sometimes this circular reveals shows and fights being made before becoming public, as we take a look at who is next in line for each belt.

The heavyweight division saw the British title become vacant as Joe Joyce recently relinquished his belt to embark on world honours. Nathan Gorman vs Fabio Wardley was pencilled in to take place for the English title, but since Joyce has vacated the strap, Gorman vs Wardley now takes place for the British title.

The cruiserweight division is also subject to having a vacant belt following Chris Billam-Smith vacating the belt. The board has confirmed that the vacant belt will be contested between Mikael Lawal and Deion Jumah. Both Lawal and Jumah fight under the same promotional banner, so expect to see this bout on a BOXXER show soon.

Dan Azeez holds the light heavyweight belt and has been ordered to face former champion Shakan Pitters. Pitters lost the belt in 2020 to Craig Richards. Richards vacated leading to Dan Azeez facing Hosea Burton for the belt, Azeez would win the belt before defending it in 2022 against Reece Cartwright. This bout is heading to purse bids at midday on Wednesday 27th of July.

The super middleweight strap will be defended this weekend as champion Lennox Clarke makes his first defence of his belt when he meets Mark Heffron in the Copper Box Arena in London.

Middleweight champion Denzil Bentley has not been mandated a fight yet. Bentley won the vacant belt in a tremendous bout with Linus Udofia back in May.

Troy Williamson holds the super welterweight title and was initially ordered to face JJ Metcalf. However, Metcalf withdrew from the bout leading to Josh Kelly being named as the mandatory challenger. This bout is heading to purse bids at midday on August 10th if a deal isn't already agreed.

Ekow Essuman has been ordered to make the second defence of his British welterweight title against former English champion Sam Antwi. Essuman defended his belt last time out against Darren Tetley at Wembley Stadium while Antwi defended his English title last time out against Conah Walker. This bout will be promoted by Frank Warren on a date to be advised.

Dalton Smith and Sam O'Maison will contest the vacant British super lightweight title in Sheffield on August 6th. The BBBofC also confirmed that the winner will waive grace and face Kaisee Benjamin when called upon to do so.

Gavin Gwynne holds the British lightweight title following his victory over Luke Willis. Gwynne will now face Craig Woodruff in his first defence and the bout will be promoted by Lee Eaton with a date yet to be confirmed.

The super featherweight champion Anthony Cacace has been given the challenge of facing Alex Dilmaghani. This is yet another bout which will be heading to purse bids on August 10th at midday if a deal isn't already agreed.

The featherweight title is vacant and was set to be contested this weekend by Nick Ball and Commonwealth champion Nathaniel Collins. However, an injury to Collins put a stop to the bout but the pair are confirmed to still meet in an event promoted by Frank Warren in the future.

Liam Davies won the super bantamweight British at the beginning of June so has yet to have had an opponent mandated as of yet. However, the board have ordered a fight between Jack Bateson and Shabaz Masoud to determine a challenger for Davies.

The bantamweight belt is held by Lee McGregor. He has been ordered to face Welshman Sean McGoldrick in defence of his belt. This bout is also heading to purse bids at midday on August 10th if a deal isn't already agreed.

The super flyweight belt is vacant. Marcel Braithwaite and Thomas Essomba were supposed to meet in a final eliminator in June, but the bout was cancelled due to an injury to Braithwaite. The pair are still mandated to fight each other, and the rescheduling of the bout will be promoted by Nisse Sauerland.

Tommy Frank will defend his flyweight belt against former European champion Jay Harris. This bout is also heading to purse bids at midday on August 10th if a deal isn't already agreed.
