‘Showtime’ Sunny Edwards shone in Sheffield as he defended his IBF flyweight title against Felix Alvarado, before calling out former WBC super flyweight champion, Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.
Edwards picked up a unanimous decision as the scorecards read 115-113×2 and 116-112 all in favour of ‘Showtime.’
The champion implemented a fast and illusive start, as he so often does, dancing around the ring and causing his Nicaraguan opponent to struggle to pin him down.

Alvarado had flurries that looked impressive in the early rounds, but it became clear his shots weren’t doing any real damage as they would be just bouncing off of Edwards’s gloves.
Edwards continued his form in the early rounds, catching the challenger on the counter as he always seemed one step ahead.
Alvarado found success in the middle rounds, as he continued to march forward and apply added pressure, but Edwards stood strong and would not unravel under the Nicaraguan’s pressure.
‘Showtime’ overcame Alvarado’s onslaught and took back control of the bout, keeping out of harm’s way, whilst landing flurries of excellence to show his class.

Edwards would be declared the winner by unanimous decision, after a hard-fought task in Alvarado, but the champion believed the scorecards were too close. ‘Showtime’ wants big fights next and set his sights on ‘Bam’ Rodiguez, who recently vacated the WBC super flyweight title to pursue a run at flyweight:
“Felix Alvarado is a phenomenal puncher and I sat there and mixed it with him. I rode shots, took shots, threw shots, and if I can do that against him then I can do it against anyone,
“Bam Rodriguez, you promised me the fight. Come and get it.”
“I had the fight 8-4 or 9-3 in my favour, I don’t know what the some of the scorecards were about. I went up clear and then coasted it from there.”
Edwards has now defended his title three times, with all victories coming by decision, and he believes he is the best in the division and is clamouring to prove that.
