Former WBO and IBF super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer has hit out at Eddie Hearn, believing that he can’t afford the rematch between her and Alycia Baumgardner.
Baumgardner unseated Mayer as champion by split decision in October 2022 in a highly anticipated unification bout. Since then, Mayer has pushed hard for the rematch, whilst Baumgardner has gone on to become the undisputed ruler of the super featherweight division, following a unanimous decision victory over Elhem Mekhaled.
Mayer is promoted by Top Rank, and Baumgardner by Matchroom, and the Top Rank fighter has hit out at Baumgardner’s promoter, Eddie Hearn. Speaking to Boxing Social, the former champion believes Hearn can’t afford to stage the rematch.
“Her (Baumgardner) and Eddie need to have a conversation. She’s saying ‘on my terms’ and Eddie is coming out saying ‘TR need to make an offer we can’t refuse and the number needs to be big.’
“We made the first offer because we were the champions. Now you’re the champion, you’re the undisputed champion. Since when does the challenger make the offer?”
“That means he (Eddie Hearn) is literally willing to send his undisputed world champion back over to Top Rank on ESPN, why? He can’t afford the Rematch.”
Mayer is on the quest to reclaim gold, and in the super featherweight division, all the hardware belongs to her rival, Baumgardner. The former champion has crossed paths with her rival on multiple occasions since their bout and will be pushing to be standing in the opposite corner to her soon.
