WBA ‘Regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell (8-0) continued his rapid ascension towards the top prize in the division as he knocked Aidos Yerbossynuly (16-1) out in round twelve in Minneapolis.
The Cuban dropped Yerbossynuly twice in the final round to put a stamp on the already impressive performance.
Morrell seemed to always have the upper hand in the fight, as he would frequently land clean shots to Yerbossynuly’s head. Yerbossynuly wasn’t going down without a fight, as he proved to be as tough as old boots and continued to come forward, but the class of Morrell shone through.

Morrell’s major breakthrough came in the final round, as he would send Yerbossynuly to the canvas. Yerbossynuly rose to his feet but would be unsteady on his legs, which saw him hold on to the Cuban, causing the referee to deduct a point.

Morrell then opted to march his man down, and the pressure paid off, as a vicious right hand sent Yerbossynuly to the canvas for a final time. The referee called the bout off, sparking celebrations from the Cuban.

However, Morrell would cut his celebrations short, as he saw Yerbossynuly struggle to stand, so he showed sportsmanship and would help his fallen opponent back to his corner.
Morrell spoke about his performance following the bout and was pleased to get the knockout.
βThe guy was strong, but thatβs me, man,
βA knockout is a knockout, in the first round or 12th, whatever.β
The Cuban now moves to 8-0 with seven of his wins coming by knockout, and this would be fifth knockout in a row. Following the bout, Morrell expressed an interest in fighting David Benavidez but is aware that Benavidez is set to fight Caleb Plant next.
Another option for Morrell would be a potential clash with the winner of Zach Parker vs John Ryder who collide for the WBO ‘Interim’ title at the O2 Arena in London on November 26th.
