In 2017, these two titans clashed for the first time in Las Vegas, and put on an instant classic. The two men showed their greatness in the bout, but the fight was marred with controversy. After 12 thrilling rounds, the bout was declared a split decision draw, a 118-110 scorecard from Adelaide Byrd in favour of Canelo was seen as inexplicable by many observers, it was a close fight either way, but it just couldn't be justified to be as wide as Byrd's card suggested.

One year later, the pair locked horns again. In an equally exciting fight, both men left it all in the ring after giving absolutely everything over 12 rounds. Once again, it came down to a split decision, as the cards read 114-114 and 115-113×2 in favour of Canelo. GGG would be dealt his first loss of his professional career and would lose his WBC, IBF and WBA world middleweight titles.

Since the second fight, the middleweight belts GGG had lost had become vacant or went to interim champions in their governing body. GGG went on the hunt for his gold, and regained the IBF title in 2019 by defeating Sergey Derevyanchenko, before regaining his WBA belt in his last fight against Ryota Murata.

Canelo took a different route, as he fluctuated in weight and started picking up titles across multiple weight division. Canelo is currently the undisputed super middleweight champion. However, last time out, Canelo dared to be great and went for gold in the light heavyweight division, Canelo had previously held the WBO light heavyweight title, but now wanted more. Canelo unfortunately suffered a loss though at the hands of WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol last time out. Canelo will be looking to get back to winning ways as soon as he can.

The fight has yet to have a venue announced, but will be live on DAZN PPV in the US and regular DAZN everywhere else on September 17th. You will not want to miss this one!
