Yafai announces himself to the world

WBA Super flyweight champion produces a career-best performance

Birmingham's first world champion, WBA super flyweight champion, Kal Yafai took full advantage of his American debut and announced himself to the world with a stunning seventh round stoppage of David Carmona.

The bout was on the undercard of Jerwin Ancajas' IBF title defence against Jonas Sultan. It was a real opportunity for Kal Yafai to show the world that he meant business in the super flyweight division as many have called him the weak link at the top table. With Ancajas and former pound for pound #1, Roman Gonzalez on the card and with the card being televised on the ESPN, Yafai turned out a career-best performance.

After Carmona came in over three pounds in weight on the scales on the champion could take the belt home if he won, and it didn't take long for the fight to catch fire.

Yafai had Carmona on the canvas just after the minute mark, a sharp left hook landing high on the head followed by a slightly delayed reaction and the Mexican former world champion was down. He rose to his feet and showed Yafai he too meant business, a right hook clearly wobbled Yafai who looked to hang on for the rest of the round.

Yafai went to work in the second, showcasing his precise combinations that UK viewers are only too familiar with. However, Yafai was guilty of perhaps staying in range for too long which Carmona made him pay for in an all-action third round.

The fourth round belonged to the champion. I have long said Yafai is quite possibly the most skilled technician in British boxing. A low looking left hook putting Carmona down again before Yafai punctuated the round with three hard left hands followed up by a battering ram of a right hand.

The fifth was a mixed bag of tricks for Yafai. A beautiful one-two put Carmona down again but no sooner had the Mexican risen from the canvas, it was Yafai who was in trouble. A low blow from the champion put Carmona down again but a shot, while he was down, saw a point taken from the Birmingham man.

By the sixth, the constant movement of Yafai was fast becoming a problem for Carmona, who was being countered every time he chased the champion down. Yafai employed the same tactics in the seventh, a crunching crisp left hook from Yafai the best shot of the round.

That was all the Mexican could take, who retired on his stool before the start of the eight. Yafai had done it!

The lighter weight divisions rarely get the acclaim of the higher weights, but this was a really entertaining fight. The rumour running around the boxing world is that a unification fight with Jerwin Ancajas who successfully defended his IBF title against Jonas Sultan will be next.
