WBO Orders Munguia vs Smith

New WBO Super-Welterweight Champ

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

IntuBoxing has learned that the World Boxing Organisation has ordered a fight between newly crowned WBO super-welterweight champion, Jaime Munguia and former champion, Liverpool's Liam Smith.

This has been confirmed by Frank Warren who confirmed that the bout is likely to take place in either August or September.

Little was known about Munguia up until a few weeks ago. Up until last weekend, Munguia was a 28-0 fighter with very little exposure outside of his native Mexico. US audiences may have caught a glimpse of him on the undercard of Tevin Farmer taking on Kenichi Ogawa back in December 2017. Then following Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's suspension due to drug tests he was considered as a possible replacement opponent for Gennady Golovkin. The Nevada State Athletics Commission shut that fight down based on the 21-year olds lack of big fight experience, and the fact he was coming up from a division below.

Within what must have been a whirlwind fortnight he was then selected as Sadam Ali's opponent after Liam Smith withdrew with a skin condition, and announced himself to the boxing world by blitzing the smaller man inside of four painful rounds.

Smith will look to reclaim the WBO title he lost to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in 2016. But even now the bookmakers are making Smith a heavy underdog.
