The pair battled over 12 rounds in Brooklyn
Former two-weight world champion Danny Garcia embarked on his quest to become a three-weight world champion, as he would outpoint Jose Benavidez Jr. in his first fight at super welterweight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Garcia showed very little signs of ring rust despite a two-year hiatus from the ring. Benavidez Jr. was game and had his moments of success, but Garcia would show his true class and would piece Benavidez apart. Garcia fired off some hefty combinations in round seven reminding fans of his ability.
It seemed a given that Garcia would be handed a wide unanimous decision, however, judge Waleska Roldan's scorecard read 114-114, meaning Garcia would have to settle for a majority decision as the other cards read 116-112 and 117-111 in favour of Garcia.
After the bout, Garcia would open up regarding his mental health and would spread an important message by going on to say: "I still have some dark days, but I try to stay positive. I feel good now. My dad was there with me the whole way. I'm nothing without this man. Because of him I'm here."
