Eye injury to Saunders forces Brit to stay on stool at beginning of round 9.
An unbelievable event unfolded last night, as the pandemic was forgotten and world superstar Canelo took on Billy Joe Saunders in a highly anticipated unification clash.
A pedestrian first round as labelled by Dazn commentary, every time Canelo came close the crowd would erupt.
The pair started to throw more in the second with Saunders moving like a satellite around the Mexican, who was looking to land big uppercuts to the body and head.
Dazn commentator for the night Carl Froch was vocal about Saunders "needing to do more", so in the third there was more expected from the Brit.
No showboating as we saw against Lemieux, Saunders undoubtedly looked nervous in there as Canelo began to find his rhythm, Saunders made use of the large ring, but Canelo was arguably on top on the cards after 3.
An uppercut landing for Canelo in the 4th swung the round in the favour of Canelo, while the 5th was the first round unquestionably won by Saunders who landed double jabs and made Canelo miss. Whereas he had a case for earlier rounds, the 5th was clearly a Saunders round.
More of the same in the 6th, Saunders looking good, landing and getting out of trouble.
The 7th was closer, but saw Saunders look more confident. His movement was less from his feet, more from his head, showing self belief, while Canelo showed patience and send in power shots to the body.
The 8th the pendulum swung - Canelo's best round of the fight. Landing on Saunders right eye, which immediately swelled, the crowd was encouraged, Saunders seemed to go into his shell. A definite eye issue.
The eye issue for Saunders proves dashing as Canelo moves on to look at a final unification with Caleb Plant.
