Just how good is Billy Joe, and how far can he go?
Just how good is Billy Joe Saunders?
He has been dazzling in some fights and not quite as bright in others without that career defining fight its difficult to judge just how good food the ultra talented fighting man can be. When pitted against huge punching Canadian David Lemieux in Canada he was dazzling, absolutely punch perfect at times making Lemieux look like a complete beginner. His punch selection and sheer variation combined with clever movement nullified and made David as lame as you can be in a boxing ring giving a complete master class away from home.
In an earlier British title clash against arch rival Chris Eubank jr he fought the type of fight that his whole career can be relatable to a real fight of 2 halves winning every second of every round until round 8 hardly took a single shot. Turning Jr with fantastic footwork constantly stabbing him with a beautifully timed jab pumping it into Eubanks face, Saunders looked amazing. Then, inexplicably, he switched off, almost like he had lost interest. It seemed all to easy allowing Eubank back into the fight making it a close fight when it really didnt need to be.
There was also Andy Lee, Billy's first world title tilt at middleweight. After a tense opening Billy exposed with perfectly timed left hands and lead right hooks showing unseen power before that point with absolute pin point accuracy against a very experienced and dangerous champion he completely dominated from that point on everything Billy threw seemed to land in a beautiful display of boxing one of Billy's finest performances to lift the WBO middleweight championship of the world.
Billy may or may not ever get to face the Mexican superstar Saul Canelo Alvarez but in my opinion if he did he has all the tools at his disposal to dethrone the current pound for pound kind , let's hope he puts it together when it matters
