The former world champion praised his bitter rival Kell Brook ahead of his fight against Terence Crawford later this month.
Former world champion Amir Khan had some surprisingly positive words for Kell Brook this week.
In an interview with Seconds Out, the Bolton boxer discussed Brook's upcoming welterweight clash against undefeated pound-for-pound contender Terence Crawford, a fighter Khan knows all too well.
The 33-year-old Brit faced off against Crawford back in April 2019, losing by TKO in one of the most bizarre stoppages in recent memory. After dominating for most of the fight, highlighted by a knockdown in the first round, Crawford accidentally hit Khan with a low blow in the sixth. Rather than take the usual allowed five minutes of recovery time, a dejected Khan told his corner he was in too much pain and unable to continue, forcing them to pull him out of the fight.
Khan's history with Brook is a lot more complicated, if ultimately just as underwhelming. The British welterweights were on a collision course for years, frequently calling each other out and exchanging insults in the press, building up a domestic super fight that sadly never came to fruition.
Instead, both fighters would end their primes in similar tragic fashion, Khan losing via devastating knockout to Canelo Alvarez in a wildly ambitious jump to the middleweight division, and Brook losing via TKO after suffering a shattered orbital bone against Gennady Golovkin, in an equally wildly ambitious jump to the middleweight division.
Since then, any hopes of a domestic fight between the two fizzled out, with Khan losing to Crawford, Brook breaking his other orbital bone against Errol Spence Jr and both fighters otherwise remaining largely inactive.
But in a surprising twist in their rivalry, Khan told Seconds Out that he will be "rooting for" Brook against Crawford and has "always respected" 'Special K' as a fighter, despite the animosity between the pair. You can watch the clip below and the full interview on Second Out's YouTube channel, in which Khan also discusses Canelo's departure from Golden Boy and DAZN (our story on that here) and his own fight plans for the future.
