Usyk to Clash with Povetkin in May heavyweight debut?

Can Usyk force his way onto the heavyweight division's top table?

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxing

Well, well, well. Boxing's premier division in 2019 shows no signs of slowing down. Are we truly getting the fights we REALLY want? Well quite frankly until we see Anthony Joshua share a ring with either Tyson Fury, or America's world heavyweight champion, Deontay Wilder. Then the answer is a resounding no. But admit it, whilst we patiently wait. The recent slew of fights announced has got you talking hasn't it?

It's easy to get carried away with the division's top four. After all, not a day goes by that social media isn't awash with fans from either side stating their opinions on who will come out on top.

But ladies and gentleman. There is one name, one man. That could throw a spanner in the works. One with the pugilistic prowess to not only rock the apple cart. But one whose talent could well be enough to carry him to the very pinnacle of the sport. That man is the current and first ever, four-belt undisputed cruiserweight champion of the World. 'The Cat' Oleksandr Usyk.

Intuboxing.com has learned that the man from Simferopol, Ukraine has elected to campaign at boxing's top table. Furthermore that his heavyweight debut will be against none other than former WBA world heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin. Intuboxing.com is led to believe that Matchroom Promoter, Eddie Hearn is lining up this mouth-watering clash for May 18th with 'The Windy City' of Chicago, Illinois being touted as the city to house a clash of two beasts from the east.

Usyk is riding the crest of a wave. It's crazy to think that he has only had sixteen professional fights. But, what a start he has had. Usyk is the current 'Fighter of the Year' in virtually everyone's eyes. Having claimed the Inaugural World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight crown in July of last year. Beating Mairis Briedis in March before claiming a shutout victory over the hard-hitting Murat Gassiev in the July. Beating both men in their own backyards. Before ruining any plans Tony Bellew had of ending his career on a high. Stopping 'Bomber' in Manchester in the eighth round of their clash last November.

At 39 years-old, Alexander Povetkin is in the twilight of his career. The decorated amateur was last seen in a boxing ring of September last year in a losing effort to Unified Heavyweight Champion, Anthony Joshua. Povetkin gave the British boxing superstar all he could handle in the opening rounds. Before Joshua came to life in the seventh stanza. Handing Povetkin his first ever stoppage loss, and his first loss since losing to Wladimir Klitschko back in 2013.

The bout would see two former Olympic Gold medallists square off. For Povetkin, at his advanced age in the sport. It would finally see the man from Kursk finally make his American debut. Usyk has fought stateside in back to back title defence against Thabiso Munchu (ninth round tko) and Michael Hunter (unanimous decision) in late 2016 and April 2017 respectively.

Can Usyk force his way onto the heavyweight division's top table? A win against a seasoned pro like Povetkin would certainly go some way to proving that. No doubt about it.
