The passing of Enzo Calzaghe

It has been confirmed that Enzo Calzaghe MBE has passed away aged 69

Today the world heard that the legendary trainer and father of the undefeated Joe Calzaghe, Enzo Calzaghe passed away. Enzo, was born 1st January 1949 in Sardinia, Italy. After a short time in London the family moved to Wales in 1972 when Joe was born. While living in Cardiff, Enzo helped out at Newbridge boxing club and evidently started taking Joe.

Enzo then took over the day to day running of the gym when Paul Williams, who was Joe's trainer, left. Enzo then took over the training of his son and all the history they made in the ring, they made together. In his career Enzo won the accolade of Coach of the Year at the BBC Sports Personality Awards, Ring Magazine trainer of the year 2007 and the Futch-Condon award for trainer of the year 2007, which is awarded ny the Boxing Writers Association of America.

As a trainer, Enzo worked with all Welsh talents most of them won numerous titles worldwide. Joe Calzaghe was the cream of the crop, but following Joe was fellow world champion Enzo Maccarinelli. Enzo captured WBU, WBO and EBU Cruiserweight titles under the guidance of Calzaghe. Another fighter on his books was Gavin Rees, who went on to win the WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight title, the British Lightweight title and the WBA Lightweight World title. Another of the rising stars he trained was Nathan Cleverly, who won the Commonwealth, British, EBU and WBO Light-Heavyweight Titles. Another decorated champion was Bradley Pryce, who held the WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight title, British Welterweight title, WBU Light-Middleweight and the Commonwealth Light-Middleweight title.

Tributes have been posted on all social media platforms.

Ex-super heavyweight champion Barry Jones tweeted: "Can't believe the news I just heard about Enzo Calzaghe. He was always lovely to me right from the amateurs all the way until I finished. R.I.P mate"

And former Welsh middleweight Gary Lockett added: "Sad news regarding the passing of Enzo Calzaghe. Thoughts and prayers go out to Joe and family."

Anthony Crolla tweeting: "Such sad news to hear of the passing of Enzo Calzaghe. Was lucky enough to chat to him a few times, was a great guy.

"Thoughts and Prayers with all the Calzaghe family. Rest in peace."

Former super featherweight champions Barry Jones added: "Enzo Calzaghe was a superb trainer. That spell when he had Rees, Enzo and Calzaghe as world champions was superb."
