IntuBoxing's Paul Humphreys gives his thoughts on a potential blockbuster lightweight clash between Gervonta 'Tank' Davis and Teofimo Lopez.
Last night, Gervonta 'Tank' Davis sent the sort of message that is difficult to ignore with an absolutetly devastating one punch knockout of Leo Santa Cruz; a perfect uppercut that would possibly have knocked out a horse... yes, it was that good.
Newly crowned lightweight supremo Teofimo Lopez now seems like the inevitable fight to make, pitting two devastating punchers together in a fight that looks on paper like it could be one for the ages. Davis carries serious power, is very technically gifted and seems to be improving all the time under the watchful eye of his mentor, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Tank has ridiculously fast hands; to combine that with Lopez' obvious ring IQ and his own power punching style would be the perfect mesh of styles. The only question is: when should this happen?
Boxing has a habit of letting huge fights like this slip by, so I hope that politics can be put to one side to make what promises to be the biggest lightweight shootout in years. Forget a Lomachenko rematch or a Haney fight; now is the time to pit these two young bulls together to see who is the best lightweight on the planet. I can't wait for the inevitable fireworks.
