'TBE' knocked down and out Victor Ortiz, then surrounded by controversy had a famous bust up with Larry Merchant live on TV
Floyd Mayweather v Victor Ortiz billed as "Star Power" on the 17th September at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas part of a Huge PPV split site double header with emerging Mexican Superstar Saul "Canelo" Alverez against Alfonzo Gomez which took place at the Staples Centre California. Mayweather had a perfect record 41-0 25 KO and Victor Ortiz 29-2-2 with 22 KOs. The stage was set with the power punching Ortiz and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya a former Mayweather opponent himself extremely confident of victory.
From round one, Mayweather used his speed, skills and accurate right hand to tag Ortiz repeatedly. Mayweather seemed in control through the first three rounds (judges scores: 30–27, 30–27, 29–28 for Mayweather), but in the fourth round, Ortiz found some success, landing a few shots and stinging Mayweather before backing him into the corner. Ortiz hit Mayweather in the face with an apparently intentional headbutt, busting open a cut on the inside and outside of Mayweather's mouth.
Referee Joe Cortez immediately called timeout and penalised Ortiz a point for the foul. Ortiz acknowledging his wrongdoing, hugged and kissed Mayweather in the corner. Cortez motioned the fighters back together to resume the fight.
The fighters touched gloves and Mayweather seemed to half-heartedly return another hug from Ortiz. Then, with Cortez looking away from Mayweather, and as the fighters separated from the hug, Mayweather caught Ortiz with a left hook, still not trying to defend himself Ortiz took a straight right bang on the button down he went.
Disoriented and confused as to what had just happened, Ortiz was unable to beat the ten count referee Joe Cortez called a halt to proceedings. In the interview after the most controversial moment of the night, Larry Merchant asked Floyd about what had just happened which he responded "its protect yourself all times" when Larry questioned the unsportsmanlike conduct Mayweather reacted angrily "you don't know s@$t about boxing HBO should fire your ass" to which Merchant responded "if I was 50 years younger I would kick your ass"
