Saunders/Golovkin had agreement in place! Middleweight Update!

But where does the WBO middleweight champion go from here?

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

Vast quantities of the boxing public rejoiced yesterday after WBA, WBC, IBO world middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin was offered agreeable financial terms suitable enough for him to take on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez on September 15th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will air live on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Now that's fantastic news, isn't it? Well, it is ... unless you are WBO world middleweight champion, Billy-Joe Saunders.

Saunders was due to face former world title challenger, Martin Murray next weekend at London's O2 Arena. But he pulled out with a 'hamstring 'injury'. Complications within that Golovkin and Canelo camps in agreeing on a deal have led many to suggest that the injury was, in fact, a case of smoke and mirrors and that Saunders was instead chasing a big money unification bout with Golovkin. Well ladies and gentleman, whether you contest the legitimacy of his injury, some of what I have said is definitely true. Saunders and Golovkin had an agreement in place to fight in California on August 25th. Golovkin is slated to make upwards of $40 million by fighting the Mexican superstar and has left the Hatfield man high and dry. Which is poetic as he has done the exact same thing to Murray.

So Saunders if left with no opponent, so who could he fight?

Well, its unlikely to be Daniel Jacobs or Sergey Derevyanchenko. Both men have been mandated to fight for the vacant IBF crown. Ditto Spike O'Sullivan who will fight on the undercard of Golovkin/Canelo. In fact, O'Sullivan claims to have been offered a big money fight against the winner in December. WBA 'Regular champion, Ryoto Murata has just agreed to a fight ... This isn't looking good for Saunders, is it?

So who could Billy-Joe face?

Well, if he is looking for a high profile name then he has but two options. WBC 'interim' middleweight champion Jermall Charlo is actively calling out every big name and looked impressive in stopping Hugo Centeno Jr in April. The young Texan is desperately craving to headline a big card and would no doubt jump at the chance to fight. The other option is Demtrius 'Boo-Boo- Andrade. The man from Providence, Rhode Island is highly ranked but wildly inconsistent in how often he fights. But is none the less a big name.

What will Billy-Joe actually do?

I'm not going to speculate, because that would be foolhardy. What he should do .... Is fight Martin Murray.
