Pacquaio/Matthyssee - Done Deal

Eight Weight World Champion To Fight In Kuala Lumpur On July 14th

Former pound for pound great and eight weight world champion, Manny Pacquaio will challenge secondary welterweight world title holder, Lucas Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 14th. It will be over a year since 'Pac-Man' last graced the ring. Pacquaio will look to return to winning ways after losing his WBO welterweight title to Jeff Horn in Australia last July.

Matthysee will put his WBA 'Regular' title on the line. His promoter Oscar De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions said "Signed, sealed, and delivered: Proud to officially announce that WBA welterweight world champion Lucas Matthysse will put his title on the line against Manny Pacquiao in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday night July 14 (U.S. time),

There will be one glaring omission from the Filipino man's corner this July. This will be the first time since 2001 that longtime trainer, Freddie Roach will not be in Pacquaio's corner. Apparently, Pacquaio had a number of issues with some statements that Roach made to the media, which annoyed Pacquaio. Instead, Pacquaio will have long-time friend and career-long assistant trainer, Buboy Fernandez in his corner. Pacquaio is a highly experienced professional, but this seems like a silly move given his corner couldn't really work out a plan b in his loss to Horn.

Should Pacquaio get past Matthysse, it is rumoured he will be looking to fight Vasyl Lomachenko in the autumn. Whilst the bout is promoted by Pacquaio's own MP promotions, Bob Arum of Top Rank will handle the US distribution rights through the ESPN platform.
