Flanagan picked up the WBO lightweight title on this day in 2015
Manchester's Terry Flanagan had his greatest night seven years ago today when he defeated Jose Zepeda at the Manchester Velodrome for the vacant WBO lightweight title.
The first round proved both fighters were very evenly matched, as Zepeda blocked out the raucous atmosphere provided by the fans of Flanagan, as his powerful counter punches seemed to land and cause some issues.
Disaster struck in round two for Zepeda, the pair began trading as the fight looked to warm up into a terrific bout, but a clash of arms left Zepeda with a dislocated shoulder. Zepeda would finish the round but his corner would pull him out.
The referee deemed the injury a fault of Zepeda's own, declaring Flanagan the winner and new WBO world lightweight champion. Flanagan would defend the title successfully six times before moving up to super lightweight in 2018.
Zepeda also moved to super lightweight since, where he came up short against Jose Ramirez in 2019, but has since worked his way back to mandatory position with the WBC at super lightweight.
