Manny Pacquiao stuns Keith Thurman to win the WBA Welterweight Title

Manny Pacquiao rolled back the years once again to capture the WBA Welterweight Title at 40 years of age, becoming the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history.

Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao showed no signs of slowing down against Keith 'One Time' Thurman, knocking the previously undefeated fighter down in the first round on the way to a split decision victory at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

With the victory, Pacquiao became world champion for an astonishing 13th time in his glittering career and set up a potential clash with the winner of the unification bout between IBF champion Errol Spence Jr and WBC champion Shawn Porter in September.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr eagerly watching ringside, the Filipino champion quelled any doubts about whether his power is still there with a peach of a right hand near the end of the first round that put Thurman down for just the second time in his career.

Pacquiao would continue to outbox the younger man for large portions of the fight, Thurman seemingly unwilling or unable to throw with any real conviction or follow up any of the meaningful right hands he did land.

Thurman would rally in the middle rounds, looking to put more pressure on the older man, using his longer reach and boxing behind his jab, but it wasn't enough to close the distance on the scorecards.

Late in the 10th round, Pacquiao landed a left hook to the body that shook Thurman to his core, almost sending him to the canvas. Not for the first time in his career, Thurman went into survival mode protecting his body for the remainder of the round.

Into the 12th, Pacquiao was up on most people's scorecards and closed out the victory with a relaxed finish, though he would have no doubt had traumatic flashbacks to his bouts with Jeff Horn and Timothy Bradley when he heard announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr say it was a split decision. But judge Glenn Feldman's 114-113 score in favour of Thurman wouldn't be enough, the other two judges at ringside scoring it 115-112 to crown Pacquiao the WBA Welterweight champion and add to the eight division champion's already incredible legacy.

Pacquiao confirmed after the fight he will focus on his role as Senator of the Philippines for the remainder of the year and look to fight in 2020, which will likely be a unification bout with the Spence/Porter winner or a rematch with a certain Floyd Mayweather Jr, who may now be coaxed out of retirement with another belt to play for.
