Luke Campbell vs Yvan Mendy

A chance for revenge

By Bryan Connolly   - @intuboxing

Three years ago, Luke Campbell (18-2) was unbeaten and the future of the Lightweight division. having beaten Tommy Coyle in the fight before facing Mendy, Campbell won the WBC International Title. He then faced Mendy (40-4-1) for his first defense of that title.

The two fighters battled on the undercard of Joshua and Whyte at the O2 Arena. Mendy won the first battle by split decision. The scorecards were 115-113 115-112 115-113. It wa sthe first time that Campbell had been knocked down in a professional contest.

After this defeat Campbell went on a five fight winning streak, and picked up the Commonwealth and WBC Silver Lightweight titles. In 2017, he main evented in California against Jorge Linares for the WBA World Lightweight title and lost that bout by split decision.

On the other hand Mendy, since beating Campbell back in 2015, has been undefeated and has also picked up other championships in that time. He won the EBU and WBC Silver Lightweight titles but hasnt fought the pedigree of fighters that Campbell has fought. Nonetheless though he has still beaten all infront of him since April 2015 when he lost to Edis Tatli.

Bryan's conclusion

Luke Campbell won gold at the 2012 Olympic games and his professional career has been successful since his transition. The fight against Linares was a very good performance and the calibre that he has faced in his career spells that he should get the revenge he wants here. As long as Campbell keeps the fight to his plan, I believe he wins this fight.

Yvan Mendy is coming in as a champion and on a big winning streak. He looks confident from the public workouts, and he is confident that the same outcome will happen tomorrow night. He will come into Wembley against the crowd like before and that wont phase him.

This should be a very entertaining fight and like a lot pf other fights in 2018 will it be REPEAT or REVENGE?
