Lomachenko/Linares Does Big Numbers!

FOTY Candidate Does Biggest Numbers

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

Top Rank and ESPN will be giving themselves a huge pat on the back after the viewership for last Saturday's fight was announced.

Firstly, the Linares vs. Lomanchenko main event drew a 1.0 metered market rating, making it cable television’s highest-rated fight of 2018. Secondly,  the entire Top Rank on ESPN telecast was ESPN’s highest-rated Top Rank telecast of the year.

The fight itself lived up to expectation, with Vasyl Lomachenko making history by claiming a world title at a third weight in just his twelfth fight. The Ukranian most certainly did not have it his own way. He overcame a knockdown in the sixth round (albeit a flash knockdown). To put Jorge Linares down with a sickening body-shot in the tenth round in front of a packed house at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

For anyone reading this that isn't an American a 1.0 on the Nielsen roughly equates to 1.19 million viewers in the US. This fight narrowly beating the 0.9 rating that Golovkin/Martirosyan and Jacobs/Sulecki achieved for HBO. Competiton in the US seems to be a two horse race as only one Showtime event has made it into the top 10 thus far. That fight was of course between Deontay Wilder and Luis Ortiz.

Top Rank and ESPN will look to continue this success with fights between Jerwin Ancajas and Jonas Sultan, which features Kal Yafai's US debut and of course Terence 'Bud' Crawford making his debut in the welterweight division against WBO champion, Jeff Horn.

I for one wouldn't mind seeing a rematch ... would you?
