Lemieux vs O’Sullivan recap

Saturday 15th September

Grand opening, grand closing. As quickly as the clash between David Lemieux and Gary O’Sullivan started, was as quickly as it ended. In what promised to be an explosive 50/50 fight, David Lemieux turned in the most satisfying knockout out his career. Lemieux destroyed O’Sullivan via first-round knockout. The ring walks and introductions were the longest part of the fight. A powerful left hand to the chin ensured a short night for O’Sullivan. Referee, Russell Mora, waved off the fight in the middle of his count.

The build-up to the fight was filled with vicious trash talk from both sides. Both fighters promised to end the night early. Lemieux went so far as to say he was going to damage O’Sullivan for life. While vile and uncalled for, Lemieux was able to live up to his word and knock O’Sullivan out. After the fight, the two combatants embraced and seemed to put the war of words behind them.

What’s next: With this victory, Lemieux has positioned himself for a WBA middleweight title opportunity against the winner of Canelo-Golovkin. The WBA president, Gilberto Mendoza, announced earlier in the week that the WBA decided to sanction the bout for the mandatory position.

For O’Sullivan, this loss, and the devastating manner in which he lost ensures O’Sullivan will fade back into obscurity. The American boxing public believed that O’Sullivan was a club fighter. The results of Saturday night confirmed those suspicions. Look for O’Sullivan to claim his rightful place as the gatekeeper for up and coming fighters or fighters looking to bounce back.
