Kell Brook Ascends Super-Welterweight Rankings

Plenty Of Options For 'The Special One' And Not Just Amir Khan

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

I have no doubt in my mind that the latest revision of the super-welterweight rankings might please one or two. No more so perhaps than former IBF Welterweight Champion Kell Brook.

'The Special One' made short work of Sergey Rabchenko in his last outing, back in his hometown of Sheffield in March. This was, of course, his first fight following back to back defeats to Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr. The most important thing, of course, was that Brook got the job done. He did so emphatically, stopping the well-traveled Belarussian in front of a heavily partisan hometown crowd. Any fears or doubts about Brook's injuries delayed temporarily after the referee, Steve Gray deemed Rabchenko unable to continue just a minute and twenty-seven seconds into the second round.

Brook naturally announced that he had renewed the love of the sport he so very nearly walked away from at the end of the year. But, equally, he as well as you, me and the rest of the boxing world are perfectly aware that there are sterner tests ahead.

One could make a very good argument that Brook is, in fact, the big money man in the super-welterweight division, and why not? Champions Jermell Charlo, Jarrett Hurd and Sadam Ali while talented fighters do not generate the same kind of money that the Sheffield man can. This is largely due to his hometown following and the ability of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom to sell a fight. As of this writing, Brook is ranked #3 by the WBA, #4 by the WBA, #9 by the WBO and finally #6 by the IBF.

My sense is that Brook is holding out for a fight against his most hated rival Amir Khan. But, despite an in-ring confrontation following Khan's victory over Phil Lo Greco. It still seems that the boxing public is no closer to seeing this fight than we ever have been. And, while you may not agree with his ascension through the rankings. That ladies and gentleman is the way things are.

Who would you like to see Brook fight next?
