Joyce To Fight For Commonwealth Title

In just two short years, unbeaten heavyweight Joe Joyce will fight for the Commonwealth strap on the undercard of Haye/Bellew 2.

The news is beginning to filter down the grapevine that Olympic silver medalist, Joe Joyce will fight for his first professional title in the paid ranks next month.

The 32-year-olds promoter, David Haye is, of course, fighting Tony Bellew in a rematch of their first encounter from March last year. It has long been thought that 'The Haymaker' would find a way for his charge to appear on the undercard. Originally, many of us believed that Joyce would indeed fight former David Haye foe, Derick Chisora. But Chisora made it abundantly clear that unless Haye was willing to put some serious money on the table for him, then that fight was unlikely to materialise.

So it is to Jamaican and Commonwealth champion, Lenroy Thomas (22-4-1) that Haye has chosen to match his budding prospect against. Thomas is no stranger to these shores, nor boxing in front of Sky Sports viewers. Having boxed David Allen twice. The last time out in Sheffield being a short nights work as an accidental headbutt opening up a cut over Allen's eye but a very premature end to the night's action.

IntuBoxing expects the news to be announced formally in the next few days.

The bout would add further strength to what is looking like a very strong card from Matchroom. The main event is being supplemented with a plethora of great fights, with John Ryder clashing against Jamie Cox over 12 rounds in the super-middleweight division.

Martin J Ward defends his European super-featherweight title against WBA International champion James Tennyson in what is being described as a world title eliminator and Paul Butler faces Emmanuel Rodriguez for the vacant IBF world bantamweight title on the card. There are also expected to be performances from Joshua Buatsi and Jordan Gill also.
