Joshua v Povetkin Breakdown

Anthony Joshua defends his world crowns at Wembley Stadium on Saturday against the Dangerous Russian puncher Alexander Povetkin here's how they match up

By Paul Humphreys and Bryan Connolly   - @intuboxing

Jab

Joshua has a range and varied jab which can be sometimes underused its long and powerful and could be a key weapon here against the shorter Povetkin

Score 8

Povetkin likes to work up and close to his opponent. The jab is not used a lot compared to the other punches in his arsenal

Score 7

Right Hand

Joshua likes to throw the straight right with real conviction he has huge power and range with the straight right possibly AJs most damaging punch

Score 9

Povetkin possesses real power in both hands and the straight left or right both can do massive damage especially in this division. He throws in combinations especially when his opponent is hurt

Score 9

Hook

Joshua given his height and reach does not tend to overuse the hook but can do when he's inside to good effect but as the saying goes don't hook with the hooker

Score 8

The left hook is probably Povetkin's favourite weapon. If he tags flush not many survive it. AJ will get hit it how he takes it that counts

Score 9

Uppercut

Joshua has a wicked uppercut used to great effect against Klitschko and Whyte a hugely damaging shot

Score 9

Another punch that Povetkin has in his locker but never uses. Joshua got tagged with a big one from Klitschko which got through so maybe we might see this on Saturday night.

Score 8

Body Punching

Joshua can be guilty of neglecting the body to a certain degree but can score with the jab and straight right from distance, however, it's unlikely we will see AJ trying to bang it out inside with Povetkin

Score 7

I could have scored this lower, as Povetkin doesn't like to punch to the body. Maybe he will slow Aj up but he tends to throw to the head as he is accurate.

Score 7

Footwork

Joshua without having the fastest footwork has purposeful footwork and placement which helps him to judge range and stay out of trouble if needs be.

Score 8

At 39, Povetkin isn't the best on his feet and his range of movement isn't great. the head doesn't move which can make him a target. Price knocked him down and so will Joshua especially with Joshuas speed.

Score 6

Chin

Joshua can hold a shot although he has been hurt in 2 occasions however he came through on both occasions so its held out so far

Score 8

Y,es Povetkin has been knocked down, once vs Price and four times vs Klitschko, but he hasnt been stopped and has the heart of a lion. Getting hurt makes the Russian angry then, hes even more dangerous.

Score 9

Defense

Joshua employs a tight guard and has a good judgement of distance allowing him to not get tagged clean often although he can be hit

Score 8

Povetkin covers up well, but the Price fight could easily have been a defeat. He was hurt in the third but Price couldnt finish the job. His defense looks vulnerable and Joshua will get through it.

Score 6

Joshua 64/80

Povetkin 61/80
