What a difference nine years can make in the life of a professional athlete. Majority of professional athletes overcome the odds and major injuries at some point in their careers but, only very few athletes can overcome earth shattering news, and come back stronger.
In the summer of 2012, Anthony Ogogo was representing Great Britain at the Olympic Games in London, and Ogogo was competing in the middleweight division. Ogogo went onto win the bronze medal, having lost in the semi final to Esquiva Falcão Florentino. Two years prior Ogogo, represented Great Britain again in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, in which he won a silver medal.
In December 2012, Ogogo was signed by Golden Boy Promotions and made his debut in April 2013 against Kieron Gray winning by knockout in the second round. His professional career as short as it was with plagued with injuries with Ogogo suffering an Achilles tendon injury and required surgery after his seventh victory.
Following a discloated shoulder whilst fighting Ruslan Schelev, Ogogo faced a ten month lay off to recover from his injury. The worst of his injuries came in his final professional encounter against Craig Cunningham, which he was pulled out of the fight following Ogogo's trainer, Tony Simms, stopped the fight due to Ogogo having blurred vision. After the fight it was confirmed that he had suffered a fractured eye socket, and expressed openly that he was visually impaired by 78 per cent after his eye had exploded.
Olympic and Commonwealth medallist Anthony Ogogo has retired ????
He had his driving license taken away from him, as he was registered blind in 2017, after recovering from two major eye surgeries. Fast forward two years to 2019, and having nine eye surgeries later, the Lowestoft star officially retired from boxing due to the extent of his injury, Ogogo released a statement. "I’ve been through a lot in my career. I’ve had 17 operations and suffered every pain imaginable. I’ve won, lost, cried and hurt. But if you were to ask me would I do it again? In a heartbeat. I love this game."
After an interview with Boxing News, he said: “I was in a bad place. I was miserable and I was bitter. I was thinking, it ain’t fair, Anthony Joshua’s earning millions of pounds and I’m skint."
Anthony Ogogo has risen from the ashes, like a soaring phoenix and in February 2019 he made his professional wrestling debut on the British Independent scene for World Association of Wrestling and eight months later he signed for All Elite Wrestling, being the first ever AEW wrestler to sign under their developmental programme being trained by Dustin Rhodes (Goldust) and QT Marshall. It was only this week that Anthony Ogogo made his in ring debut for AEW, securing a win against Cole Karter winning within a minute.
Following all the setbacks in his career Ogogo in my opinion, and I won't be alone in this conclusion, is an INSPIRATION to not only boxing fans, but to wrestling fans alike. And if you believe hard enough, in a dream of overcoming the odds, belief will always be triumphant.
