IBF Orders Bout For Middleweight Title

Golovkin Stripped Off Title Last Week/Purse Bids Called

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

IntuBoxing.com confirmed last week that WBA 'Super, WBC & IBO world middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin had been stripped of the International Boxing Federation world middleweight title.

The governing bodies reasoning was simple. They were unsatisfied that Golvokin had failed to meet its mandatory challenger, Sergey Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10KO). For those perhaps unfamiliar with the name, Derevyanchenko is a 32-year-old Ukranian and former Olympian from the Beijing Olympics. There are many that think the IBF stripping Golovkin is unfair given the rigmarole he had to go through with the Canelo fight. But the IBF had banged the gavel, what is done, is done.

Yesterday, the IBF ordered Derevyanchenko to face Brooklyn's 'Miracle Man', Danny Jacobs (34-2, 29KO) for its vacant title. The IBF sent letters to both Lou DiBella and Eddie Hearn, both men's respective promoters and ordered negotiations to be made immediately. Failure to come to a conclusion by the 11th July will lead to a purse bid, the split of which would be 50/50.

Jacobs is also rumoured opponent for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and is also the WBA mandatory, so he isn't shy of one or two options. Yes, the Canelo fight would line his pockets exponentially more than the fight for the Title. But of course, with the title comes greater bargaining chips for bigger fights down the line, and with Canelo and Golovkin rematch finally expected to be signed after strained negotiations one would expect Jacobs to challenge the Ukranian.
