Hearn was speaking about Conor Benn clash with Samual Vargas
Afternoon Ladies & Gentleman ... Me again.
Many of you will have seen my article yesterday on where we could all be watching Matchroom shows in the not too distant future. Matchroom Boxing's CEO, Eddie Hearn mentioned that there were four parties at the table. I speculated over the possiblity of which network, or platform, we would be seeing the likes of Anthony Joshua, Dillian Whyte and Joshua Buatsi ply their trade.
You'd have seen my opinion that i think Hearn is the smartest businessman in the sport. However, i cant help but think Eddie may well have dropped a clanger and inadvertedly revealed where the future TV deal lies.
Eddie Hearn on Conor Benn's fight with Samuel Vargas this Saturday: "It’s very important for Conor and Matchroom because, when you look at the future of British boxing, and British stars, Conor is the new breed, he's the next pay-per-view star."— Michael Benson (@MichaelBensonn) April 5, 2021
Now, this is entirely my reading between the lines here. But, given that Hearn has mentioned 'the next pay-per-view' star. Surely that means Matchroom's future doesn't lie with DAZN, at least in the short term.
Yes, as i mentioned yesterday. ITV does have it's own pay-per-view platform. However, i cant help but think that Matchroom's future lies in the hands of Sky Sports.
It's that old addage isnt it? If its not broken, dont fix it.
