Groves vs Smith - Date and Venue Announced for WBSS Final

Finally, a date and venue have been announced for the super-middleweight final of the World Boxing Super Series between George Groves and Callum Smith

So, we finally have a date and venue for the prestigious super-middleweight division of the World Boxing Super Series and the chance to get their hands on the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

Of course, Groves could not make the first proposed date back in June recovering from a shoulder operation from an injury he sustained in the 12th and final round of his semi-final clash with Chris Eubank Jr in February at the Manchester Arena.

The rescheduled bout will now take place on September 29th, in... Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Really? Two English fighters colliding half way around the world is not ideal from a fan’s perspective, as I'm sure you will agree.

However, it truly is a fascinating fight, which we will break down in more detail at a slightly later date; such a good contrast of styles and so many “what ifs”.

For now we are left scratching our heads for the seemingly crazy decision to take this fight to Saudi Arabia. I’m sure Groves and Smith would have made some purse concessions for the chance to do this in front of their home fans.

Obviously, breaking into a Middle Eastern market will produce huge money, but it seems like the promoters have missed a oppurtunity to really start this tournament off with a bang.
