Fury Return Does Huge TV Numbers

The Return Of The Mack Drew A Huge TV Crowd

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

Last weekend at Manchester Arena saw the return of 'The Gypsy King' Tyson Fury. Fury, of course, was making his first competitive appearance in a professional boxing ring after a two and a half year exile.

It is fair to say that the main event itself was a bit of a farce, judging by the reaction on social media there has been no positive feedback. In fact, the brawl that broke out midway through the fight drew more attention than Fury's clowning did. But let's not get into that. IntuBoxing learned from Tyson's father John, that his son NEVER wanted to step into the ring with Sefer Seferi.

It's a fight that will not live long in the memory, thats for sure.

What is less of a joke is the sheer number of British boxing fans that tuned in to see the return of the man who beat the man. No this was not the same Tyson Fury that beat Wladimir Klitschko on a November night in Dusseldorf in 2015. But then again, it was never going to be. But nevertheless, the TV numbers highlight the importance of Tyson's return to boxing's heavyweight division.

Promoter Frank Warren has taken to social media to announce that a whopping 814,000 British people tuned in on Saturday night to watch 'The return of the mack'. Whats most impressive about those numbers is that the fight was only shown on BT Sport. It was not shown on Boxnation as Frank Warren's Queensbury promotions look to move away from the monthly subscription service and exclusively onto BT sports platform.

So why is this so impressive?

Well, BT Sport is only available in a little over five million homes in the UK. Meaning almost one in five tuned in to see Saturday nights main event, against a little-known opponent, highlighting the appeal of Tyson Fury.

Fury will fight again on the undercard of Carl Frampton's Windsor Park homecoming fight on August 18th.
