Fresh Hope For George Groves!?!

WBC 'Diamond Champion Callum Smith confirms final could take place in August/September.

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

Not so long ago, IntuBoxing told you that despite his elimination from the tournament that Chris Eubank Jr could very well fight in the final of the World Boxing Super Series.

Now, ladies and gentleman, this didn't sit all too well with any of you now did it? It most certainly did not sit well with me, nor with 99.9% of the boxing world. After all, Eubank was all due respect outclassed and in some quarters even exposed by the WBA 'Super' super-middleweight champion. George 'The Saint' Groves. Groves gave Eubank Jr a boxing lesson in the first half of the fight before Eubank Jr's raw aggression saw him pressure Groves late in the fight. But the judges returned scores of 117-112, 116-112, 115-113 in the champion's favour.

But as well all know, disaster struck the champion in the twelfth round, with Groves dislocating his shoulder early in the round before bravely clinging on to hear the bell. And thus, one of the hottest topics in world boxing was created. Would he be allowed to, or could he make the final?

Initially, the answer seemed like a no. Kalle Sauerland, the mouthpiece for the WBSS and of course Groves promoter was steadfast that the final would be in July, and if Groves could not make the final then a replacement could and would be found. But, in another turn of events. WBO & WBC cruiserweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk also notified Camosa AG (the organizers of the tournament) that he too was injured and could not make the final's original date.

So what was to happen? Social media was awash with criticism that allowing a beaten participant to compete in the finals for both Eubank Jr or Mairis Briedis would make a mockery of the tournament, and you'd have to agree.

But ... for all George Groves fans, there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

The other participant in the final WBC 'Diamond' champion Callum Smith has shed some light on the subject. Kalle Sauerland's ten-day deadline set on May 10th has expired, and he is awfully quiet. But the youngest of Liverpool's fighting Smith family was able to shed some light on the subject.

"I'm hearing now maybe there is a chance it could go back to August-September. I'm in training and I've got to expect the unexpected. If they turn around and say it's Groves or Eubank Jr on June 29, then I've got to go with that date.' Smith told Sky Sports.

"It was all over social media that Eubank Jr was stepping in, it was official and stuff, and it was never official. Nothing had been confirmed to us. Then I was hearing maybe there's a chance they could put it back for Groves, which is what I want.

"I've said I would rather wait and fight Groves. He's got the world title, which is what I entered the tournament for. It's what I've wanted since turning pro and it seems to be running away from me. I will catch it someday. I feel like I would get more credit, more reward, more everything for beating George Groves, then I would Chris Eubank Jr."

Kalle Sauerland HAS said Eubank Jr is a viable option. But for the sake of the tournament it seems the organisers have mellowed on their stance and done the right thing.... and this journalist could not be happier!
