FIGHT PREVIEW: Mikey Garcia vs Sergey Lipinets

By Aaron Cooper

The March of the heavyweights slows down this week, allowing our attention to move across to the light welterweight division. The bright lights of New York City are replaced by the vast city of San Antonio, Texas, in a fight that could produce a shootout worthy of the Alamo.

IBF Welterweight Champion Sergey Lipinets makes the first defence of his crown against a man that is quite possibly the best counter puncher in the world today, Mikey Garcia. Should Garcia be victorious, he would win a world title in a fourth weight division.

The champion is a former kickboxer turned boxer who has enjoyed a rapid rise up the ranks of world boxing. Whilst Garcia does hold a higher knockout ratio, Lipinets is no stranger to producing a knockout finish of his own, stopping 10 of his 13 opponents inside the scheduled distance. He won his world title in November last year, beating Akihiro Kondo for the belt left vacant by Terence Crawford. The judges' scorecards did not provide an accurate picture of just how close the fight really was. Kondo withstood a barrage of body shots throughout the entire fight, but kept coming forwards. He managed to rock the would-be champion in the fifth.

Garcia's career has really been quite a stop/start affair. A contract dispute with his promoter Top Rank kept him out of the ring for over two years. Returning in 2016, this will be only his fourth fight since his return. He was only seen in the ring once last year, outpointing Adrien' The Problem' Broner. Although it has to be said if he had fought as many opponents as he has called out in recent times he'd certainly have been more active.

Both men enter the ring on Saturday undefeated fighters. The edge in experience isn't even close with Garcia contesting in 24 more bouts than that of his opponent. However, you would have to give the natural size advantage to the champion, especially given that Garcia's professional campaign began in the 126-pound division.

Prediction?

I find it hard to look past Garcia in this fight. While it's clear Lipinets can punch and fight I don't think he has the skill set to give Garcia too many problems. Put simply, Garcia is one of the best on the planet. His ability to mix a fine variety of technical skill with his devastating power leads me to think Garcia could stop Lipinets in the middle to late rounds.
