Charlie Edwards punch perfect en route to third round stoppage

Charlie Edwards put on a punch perfect performance in what has to be the best of his fourteen career thus far. Dropping Anthony Nelson three times on his way to a third-round stoppage.

The former British super-flyweight champion came flying out of the blocks showcasing his fancy footwork as he circled Nelson looking for openings. The home crowd buoyed Nelson, but it looked in vain from the very beginning as a gulf in class was apparent.

The Croydon man had Nelson on the floor with a beautifully sneaky uppercut. Although his posturing post-knock-down did get him a ticking off from the referee. Nelson rose to his feet, but a flash of nervousness crept over the face of the man from the north-east. It wasn't long before Nelson was on the deck once more, a crunching shot had Nelson on his knees blowing hard. But to his credit, he got back up and hunted Edwards down.

Nelson marched straight onto Edwards in the third, which was foolhardy given it hadn't worked for him in the previous two rounds. This proved true as a huge right hand had Nelson face down on the canvas, the referee dispensing of the count at six.

"I think I sent out a big statement," Edwards told Sky Sports. "We're planting my feet a lot more and as you can see - the power is coming. Kal Yafai, you can't run forever mate. I know I can beat him, sparred many rounds with him. He's there for the taking."

In picking up the vacant World Boxing Association Continental Super Flyweight Title Edwards now has a high ranking with the World Boxing Association.
