DeGale - Champion Once More!

‘I’m back, Team Chunky, we’re back. Two-and-a-half years I had it and I lost it to Caleb. He embarrassed me, but we’re back,’

James DeGale traveled to Las Vegas knowing that his career was on the line .... He had gone to America to win a world title before and in the early hours of this morning. He did it again.

James DeGale showed grit, determination and most importantly the heart of a champion to regain the IBF Super-Middleweight title he lost just under four months ago. Say what you will about Caleb Truax, he certainly proved he can give any top super-middleweight in the world a grueling fight. Don't let a stupidly wide 117-110 scorecard fool you. The fight was just as close as the other two 114-113 scorecards described. The wide card throwing further shade at the quality of judging in world title fights.

The fight itself wasn't pretty. DeGale started brightly but still allowed Truax to bulldoze him to the ropes. An action reminiscent of their first fight. From then on in it was a scrappy fight, full of headbutts, one of which opened up a nasty cut that clearly bothered the new champion throughout the fight. There was plenty of holding and even some pushing and shoving. Which cost DeGale a point in the tenth.

The North Londoner had promised to call time on his career should he lose the rematch. But, as the scorecards were read out, those thoughts and feelings were washed away, James DeGale is a two-time super-middleweight champion.

‘It feels great.  But full credit to Caleb – he showed he can mix it with the top fighters. I’m just happy that I’m a two-time world champion and I got my IBF world title back. ‘I’m back, Team Chunky, we’re back. Two-and-a-half years I had it and I lost it to Caleb. He embarrassed me, but we’re back,’ he said.

DeGale's eye injury will take time to heal, there is no doubt about that. But as he heads back to England, he is safe in the knowledge he is back at boxing's top table. Yet another British Super-Middleweight champion for the country to boast .... and a fight with an old foe a possibility for the future
