Chavez Jr to Matchroom USA?

Mexican Former World Champion To Ink 3-Fight Deal?

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

IntuBoxing has learned from sources in Mexico that former WBC middleweight champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is in active talks to become Matchroom USA's first signing since the announcement of the partnership with fledgling streaming service, DZN.

Chavez Jr has had to live in the shadow of his father, and I don't think it unfair to say that he has not lived up to the expectations that were set earlier in his career. Chavez burst onto the scene all the way back in 2013 and has since gone on to fight fifty-five times, losing three, drawing one and one bout was ruled a no-contest. Whilst he began his boxing career at the super-welterweight limit, his career has taken him as high as the 175-pound (light-heavyweight) division. He holds notable wins over former contender finalist, Peter Manfedo Jr, John Duddy and of course, Andy Lee in a fight that saw him crowned world champion.

In all fairness, two of his three losses have come to elite level opposition at the hands of Sergio Martinez and in his last fight against Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May of last year. His other loss came at the hands of Andrey Fonfara in his jaunt at light-heavyweight.

My understanding is that he will fight in August on either the 4th or the 11th and then look to sign a three-fight deal with Hearn. This will be a piece of incredibly shrewd business if Hearn manages to sign Chavez Jr given his superstar popularity in his home country of Mexico.

Possible opponents for his next bout include Gabriel Rosado, Vanes Martirosyan or a fight with season one winner of the contender, Sergio Mora.
