VIDEO: An MC mixup and Jacobs integrity mixup highlights
A moment of madness from the MC and a cornerman questioning his own fighters integrity, despite him being a two time world champion, were the main highlights from a widely regarded 'dull affair' in Florida as Danny Jacobs inched over the line past Gabe Rosado.
Despite Jacobs claiming the split decision win, it was Rosado who initially celebrated, as the MC read the wrong hometown out while announcing the winner, going with Philadelphia over Brooklyn. Despite immediately correcting himself, 'King' Gabe was already hugging his corner before suffering the cruel twist of fate.
Jacobs (37-3 30 KOs) is plotting a route to landing World honors at 168lbs to become a two-weight World ruler, and had said his mission was not just to send a warning to the Super-Middleweight division, but to silence Rosado (25-13-1 14 KOs).
The ‘Miracle Man’ is a two-time king at 160lbs but dipped his toe into the Super-Middleweight pond when he forced Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to quit on his stool after five rounds in December. His second bout at the new weight was against Philly’s Rosado, and Jacobs had said ‘King’ Gabe will pay for years of disrespect and trash talk.
He didn't look good in the ring though, neither fighter did. In between rounds Jacobs own cornerman was heard asking him if he "had money on the fight", Eddie Hearn later tweeting that 'neither man deserved to win'.
Cancer survivor Jacobs will go down as legendary for what he has achieved in the sport of boxing, climbing to the top of the mountain after a huge battle with health, while also being the man who took the invincibility mirage away from Gennady Golovkin. Despite ultimately losing to the Kazakh, GGG had been revered as 'a monster' in the middleweight division, and many had Jacobs as winning that fight.
Last night however, won't live long in the memory.
