CONFIRMED - Yarde Opponent Announced

Frank Warren announces polish light-heavyweight for next fight.

Frank Warren has today confirmed that British light-heavyweight prospect, Anthony Yarde (15-0 14KO) will fight Dariusz Zek (27-3-3 9KO) for the WBO European and Intercontinental light-heavyweight titles on June 23rd at London's O2 Arena. The card will be shown live on BT Sport and Boxnation.

Yarde has drawn some criticism of late. The Hackney man's lack of amateur background is well known, but equally after fifteen professional outings, so is the lack of quality of opponents. It is strange that a better opponent has not been found, and that an opponent has been named just eleven days before fight night. Yarde was scheduled to be on the undercard of this bout all the way back in April before Billy-Joe Saunders was forced to pull out of his April 14th bout with Martin Murray for the WBO title.

Zek is a 31-year old southpaw from Poland who stands at six feet two, two inches taller than Yarde. He is 3-1-2 in his last six bouts with the most notable name on his record being that of Robin Krasniqi (42-3-0). However, Zek was on the losing end of a decision that night. Krasniqi may be known to British audiences, losing a unanimous decision to Nathan Cleverly in 2013.

Given Yarde's limited experience, he has still risen to #2 in the World Boxing Organisation rankings, which has posed as a head scratcher to many. His team has already been forced to turn down a world title shot against IBF champion, Artur Beterbiev. That shot has now gone to British and Commonwealth champion & domestic rival Callum Johnson.

Yarde has a pool of domestic talent to test himself against. However politics are against him in that sense as many are Matchroom fighters, of which Yarde's promoter, Frank Warren does not do business. So perhaps it is European and Commonwealth talent that Yarde must ply his trade against? One thing is for certain he needs a challenge, and quick.
