Burns Wins In Fight #50

Three-weight world champion victorious after 8-month lay off.

Former three-weight world champion, Ricky Burns (42-7-1,14KO) celebrated his fiftieth professional bout with a stoppage victory over Croatian challenger, Ivan Njegac (10-5,3KO) under the bright lights of Newcastle's Metro Arena.

Burns has not been seen in a boxing ring since losing a unanimous decision to former WBA world lightweight champion, Anthony Crolla in October last year.

One must think such a momentous achievement of making it to fifty professional bouts as Britain's only ever three-weight world titleholder might have deserved more fanfare, alas that was not meant to be.  That didn't stop 'Rickster' from marching to the ring in attire akin to Rocky Balboa or Apollo Creed.

Stepping into the ring at the super-lightweight limit Burns wasted little time in firing a piston-like jab into the face of Njegac, and it didn't take long for the trademark body shots to began to tenderise the ribcage of the travelling fighter.

The second saw the same action, Burns controlling the range with his jab and chopping in a few heavy right hands into the face of Njegac. The third was as the first two rounds had been, although Burns did get caught on the way in, and took one or two headbutts for his trouble.

In boxing, we say if you hit the body the head will die. Well, that's exactly what we saw from Ricky Burns as shot after shot beat Njegac's body into submission. The Croatian deciding not to come out for the fifth stanza.
