Boxing's Biggest Money Makers: Who Are They?

Canelo's Suspension Sees Him Fall As Joshua Becomes The World's Top Earner

By Aaron Cooper   - @intuboxingfm

Things keep going from bad to worse for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Two failed drugs tests, a suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commision, a damaged reputation and now according to Forbes he is no longer the biggest star in the sport. The simple fact of the matter is this, he robbed himself of an eight-figure payday, intentionally or not....

But this does mean one thing, and it will come as a surprise to no one, that unified heavyweight champion of the world, Anthony Joshua is now boxing's new king. Joshua has made a fortune by spearheading a rebirth in British boxing. One can argue as much as they chose, but the facts are there for all to see. Record PPV numbers, selling out football stadium bouts and the muscle of the virtual monopoly that is Sky Sports Box Office (for the time being at least), Joshua recently pocketed £18m for his latest title defense against Joseph Parker and around £15 million a piece for his victories over former heavyweight king, Wladimir Klitschko and Carlos Takam. Why don't we throw in a potential $50 million dollar purse for fighting WBC champion, Deontay Wilder, as well as his endless sponsorship deals and one begins to see that Anthony Joshua is boxing's new moneyman and could well be for the foreseeable future?

For the curious amongst you, here is the top ten list in full:

  1. Anthony Joshua
  2. Gennady Golovkin
  3. Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez
  4. Vasyl Lomachenko
  5. Deontay Wilder
  6. Errol Spence Jr
  7. Terence Crawford
  8. Sergey Kovalev
  9. Daniel Jacobs
  10. Mikey Garcia

Whilst promoter, Eddie Hearn looks to cement a foothold in the US market with fledgling streaming service DZN. It looks like Joshua will reunite with Showtime to make his US debut either this year or early next. Given the network has slipped behind ESPN and HBO in ratings this year, that the may look into their deep pockets and pull out all of the stops to make sure Joshua stays with them. Further lining the pockets of the biggest star in the sport ... Does this remind you of anyone ... Floyd Mayweather perhaps?
