From 1982 to 2021 and beyond...
Matchroom Sport was formed in 1982, after Barry Hearn started the managerial duties of Steve Davis in 1978. Once it was formed Matchroom Sport managed the eight biggest names in the world of snooker, having four world champions on their books. Having cracked the snooker world, Matchroom Sport tried its hand in professional boxing.
In 1987, the first event promoted was a fight between Frank Bruno and Joe Bugner in front of 35000 people. That fight ended in a TKO victory for Bruno in the 8th round. Eddie Hearn became managing director of Matchroom Boxing and now is one of the leading boxing promoters in the world. He focuses mostly on fulfilling the deal with Sky Sports which are to broadcast up to 20 live shows a year until 2021.
Hearn promotes Matchroom's world champions, contenders and rising talents taking them under his wing and progressing them from debuts to world title fights. His stable of boxers is always growing as they are always on the lookout for talent either established fighters or rookies, in terms of professional rookies. His current stable consists of fighters from all around the world. Most of his fighters are British and Irish but he also has Americans, Mexicans and other nationalities and with Hearn having the broadcasting deals with Sky Sports and the DAZN media which broadcasts worldwide his stable of fighters is constantly growing.
His shows the magnitude of the empire that has been formed. Selling out arena after arena, with shows holding a capacity of 80000 people is no mean task and Matchroom provides this time and time again, and shows no signs of slowing down. With the pandemic hitting boxing in early 2020, Hearn and Matchroom boxing started 'Fight Camp' which was a series of boxing events staged in Hearn's garden with the boxing ring erected and even with no fans in attendance thrilled fight fans.
As I write this, there is no UK boxing events allowed in January but as things stand the BBBoC have said will be reviewed for February. One event that has been signed for a fight night in February is Canelo Alvarez will defend his super middleweight titles against Avni Yildirim.
The United Kingdom fight fans are eagerly awaiting the signing potentially of the biggest heavyweight fight in the history of boxing between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Hearn has said if the fight cannot happen in the UK with the current restrictions, then that fight will happen this year overseas.
